Ukraine was informed on border river pollution and cleaning up, Romanian Environment Ministry says
Romania informed neighbor Ukraine and the European Commission on the heavy metals pollution on border river Tisa and the set up of a committee to do the cleaning up fast and currently there is no problem on the river, an Environment Ministry spokesman told NewsIn.
However, the local authorities were informed by some of the forestry workers in the area and not by the company in charge of the Toroioaga water cleaning station.
Still, Romanian authorities say they informed the Ukrainian ones as soon as they found out, respecting the Espoo Convention. The European Commission was also notified, Environment Ministry spokesman Dragos Nacuta said.
The pollution had no impact at the border and also a report was filed to Ukrainian authorities, he said, after the neighbors asked for more information on the incident and the measures took to limit the spread.
Nevertheless, Ukrainian authorities also announced the EC and complained this is not the first time Romania pollutes waters at the border and never pays damages to its neighbor.
