Leader of New Generation Party (PNG) Gigi Becali, currently held in preventive arrest for allegedly restraining the persons who tried to steal his car, will run for a seat in the European Parliament (EP) on the list of Greater Romania Party (PRM), a party with rather extremist views.

The PRM head Corneliu Vadim Tudor declared on April 3 that he will offer Becali the second spot on the list in an attempt to give him a helping hand in an idealistic and unselfish manner.

However, Vadim added that this not an alliance between PRM and PNG.

Becali, the patron of one of Romania's most popular soccer teams Steaua Bucuresti, received a 29 day preventive arrest warrant for illegally restraining three persons who had allegedly stolen his car. If found guilty, Becali could look at three to ten years in prison.
