Romania's national currency inches to 4.2298 lei/euro, on low transactions on the market

The reference exchange rate settled by the central bank BNR slipped 0.03 percent to 4.2298 lei per euro, on an apathetic market, with few transactions, which did not follow the regional flow, as the neighbor currencies grew significantly after investors showed more interest on the emergent markets.

Yesterday, BNR showed a reference exchange rate of 4.2310 lei per euro, the maximum level of the past four weeks.

The leu waved within a small range at debut, between 4.23 and 4.2350 per euro. At 1:10 p.m. banks were buying an euro with 4.226 lei and selling it for 4.235 lei.

In the region, the Polish zloty gained from 4.15 to 4.11 versus the euro, while the Hungarian forint soared from 271.1 to 269.3 over the single European currency.

For the U.S. dollar, BNR's exchange rate lowered 0.59 percent to 2.9571 lei per dollar, from the previous 2.9747.

On international markets, the U.S. currency decreased from 1.4210 to 1.43 per euro and at 1:10 p.m. Romania's hour, the euro was traded for 1.4318 dollars.

Interbank interests for overnight deposits plunged to 4.5 – 5.5 percent a year, way below the monetary policy rate of 8.5 percent a year.
