Romania's leu slips to over 4.22 against the euro, on regional trend

Romania's national currency, the leu, depreciated slightly in the first morning transactions to over 4.22 against the euro, in line with other regional currencies, but with a smaller amplitude.

The leu was traded for 4.218 units per euro on opening and declined to a maximum exchange rate of 4.2260, then recouped a little to over 4.22. At 10:55 a.m. banks bought the euro with 4.2210 lei and sold it for 4.2260 lei.

In the region, similar currencies continued their downward trend. The Polish zloty lost ground from 4.379 to 4.403 versus the euro and the Hungarian forint depreciated from 275.7 to 278.4 units per euro. 

On international markets, the U.S. currency climbed from 1.398 to close to 1.39 against the euro and then suffered a slight correction. At 10:55 a.m. Romania's hour, the euro was traded for 1.3945 dollars. 

Interbank interests for overnight deposits lowered to 8.5 - 9 percent per year, remaining close to the benchmark rate of 9 percent.
