Romania's general prosecutor Laura Codruta Kovesi sent a letter to the Deputies Chamber asking for the reactualization of the Zambaccian 1 file, which involves the Social Democrat deputy Adrian Nastase, after the Constitutional Court took notice of the Chamber's set of rules.

The letter is on today's daily agenda of the Chamber's Permanent Bureau. The file against Nastase contains accusations of bribery, influence peddling and document forgery.

The Constitutional Court looked into the Lower House regulation by which deputies voted in favour of the penal case be reopened which prompted the prosecutor's letter.

In the Zambaccian file, Nastase is accused of accepting bribery, blackmail and influence peddling. His wife, Dana, is charged with complicity to bribery. Nastase is accused of using his power as prime minister during 2000-2004 to obtain goods totaling 1.3 million euros.

Romania entered the European bloc at the beginning of 2007 with the promise to crack down high-level corruption and send "big fish" to jail.
