Political parties in Romania give final touches to candidate lists for the European Parliament
Romania's political parties will present today their final lists of candidates at the elections for the European Parliament that will be held on June 7.
The Democrat-Liberal (PD-L) ruling party will open the list with former premier and first vice president in PD-L, Theodor Stolojan.
Former independent Justice Minister Monica Macovei during 2004 – 2007 accepted the proposal of the democrat-liberals to candidate for the European Parliament and will most certainly occupy one of the top three spots on the list after Stolojan, people close to the situation declared for NewsIn.
The other governing Social Democrat Party (PSD) is still at odds over the potential presence of outsider Lavinia Sandru on the party's list.
Most PSD leaders disagree with it, saying that Sandru, now leader of the smaller National Initiative Party (PIN) is not entitled to run for the social-democrats because she has not worked for the party.
PSD honorific president and founder Ion Iliescu was outraged at the idea and said the party would have to choose between Sandru and himself.
The PSD list will be opened by former Foreign Minister Adrian Severin and by Rovana Plumb, head of the women organization. The next spots will go to current MEPs Adriana Ticau, Daciana Sarbu and Ioan Mircea Pascu.
The Liberals (PNL), the main opposition party in Romania, put vicepresident Norica Nicolai on top of their list, followed by current MEPs Adina Valean, Renate Weber, Ramona Manescu and Cristian Busoi.
Former Finance Minister Daniel Daianu was not included on the list for the European Parliament elections because he failed to collaborate well with the party, explained the new PNL leader Crin Antonescu, who added that former Foreign Minister Adrian Cioroianu refused the eighth spot and decided not to run.
