New car sales in Romania plunge 53.52% in the first eight months, data show
New car sales dropped 53.52 percent in the first eight months compared to the similar period of the previous year, to 92,428 units, according to data of the Association of Car Producers and Importers (APIA).
As many as 198,861 cars were sold in the first eight months of 2008.
Some 9,607 vehicles were sold in August, a 67.97 percent fall versus the 24,447 units reported in the same month last year.
Local cars represented 2,653 of the units sold in August and 28,733 of the ones sold in the first eight months, while imported vehicles represented 6,954 of the cars sold last month and 63,695 of those sold from January to August.
The Romanian auto market, including cars, commercial vehicles and buses, plummeted 56.66 percent year-on-year in the first eight months, to 103,592 units. As many as 239,040 vehicles were sold in the first eight months of 2008.
Romania's top automaker Dacia sold the highest number of cars in August (2,653 units), booking a 27.6 percent market share. It was followed by Hyundai with a 9.2 percent market share (883 units).
