Local authorities report the first death caused by swine flu, in eastern Romania

A 43-year-old man from Siret town died of swine flu at a hospital in Iasi on November 20, Romania counting ten severe cases of swine flu at the time, with five patients receiving mechanical ventilation, according to representatives of the Health Ministry.

The man was infected with the AH1N1 virus and his condition got worse following some complications caused by obesity and diabetes, said the government secretary of the Health Ministry, Adrian Streinu-Cercel. The patient died following a cardiac arrest.

The ten patients indicating a hard condition are hospitalized in the county of Iasi.

Total count of swine flu infections in Romania reached 1,966, with 45 new cases confirmed in the past 24 hours.

The first swine flu contamination in Romania occurred on May 23, on a young woman who had returned from the United States.
