Final results – Basescu wins presidential elections with 50.33% of Romanians\' votes, BEC says
After counting the votes from all the voting sections, the Central Electoral Bureau (BEC) announced Traian Basescu received 50.33 percent of Romanians\' votes and Mircea Geoana 49.66 percent, so the difference between the two candidates is of 0.67 percent.
As many as 58.02 percent of those with voting rights went to the polls on Sunday to choose Romania\'s president, or 10,620,116 people. About 1.3 percent of the votes were canceled.
Thus, 5,275,808 people elected Basescu for a new mandate as president, while 5,205,760 people picked Geoana for the position. The difference between the two candidates is of 70,048 votes.
BEC\'s final recording of proceedings will be sent to the Constitutional Court most likely on Thursday, according to its spokesman, Marian Muhulet.
